I love children.  In strollers, walking down the street holding their mothers' hand, sitting proudly in a restaurant with their parents, they make me happy and also sad.  Happy, because they're so young and filled with energy.  Sad, because they have no idea of what awaits them in this troubled world.

I can't help myself, in a restaurant I see a young girl of maybe five years of age, sitting so proudly at the table with her parents.  I walk over to her, "You are very beautiful."  She looks at me in pleasant surprise.  I give her a quarter, "Will you call me in about fifteen years?"  The parents give me a pleased thank you as I go back to my table.

I have been doing that for a long time.  Many years ago, I was doing a movie in Israel.  I was visiting General Yadin and his family.  He's the famous general with a patch over his right eye.  They had a beautiful daughter, Yael, who was about ten years old.  I said my usual spiel, "You're very beautiful, here's a dime; will you call me in about ten years?"  Everyone laughed.

Ten years later, I was back in Los Angeles, the phone rang.  "Hello?"
"Is this Mr. Douglas?"
"Yes."
"I'm Yael, ten years has passed.  You asked me to call you."

When I reach 110 I expect a lot of phone calls.
